Canadian Red Cross Instructor Certification levels

Canadian Red Cross First Aid Program courses are divided into distinct Instructional Disciplines. Specific and individual Instructor certification levels are available within each discipline and across multiple disciplines. It is possible to hold multiple Canadian Red Cross Instructor certifications in any of the First Aid Program disciplines, including the Core Programs, Professional Responder Programs, Wilderness Programs, and Instructor Development.

Core First Aid Discipline
Canadian Red Cross Instructor certifications available within the Core Discipline include CPR Instructor (CPRI), and First Aid & CPR Instructor (FAI).

Professional Responder Discipline
Canadian Red Cross Instructor certifications available within the Professional Responder Discipline include Basic Life Support Instructor (BLSI), First Responder Instructor (FRI), and Emergency Medical Responder Instructor (EMRI).

Wilderness First Aid Discipline
Canadian Red Cross Instructor certifications available within the Wilderness First Aid Discipline include Remote First Aid Instructor (RFAI), Wilderness First Aid Instructor (WFAI), and Wilderness First Responder Instructor (WFRI).

Youth Programs Discipline
Canadian Red Cross Facilitator certification at the Youth Leader (YL) level is available within the Youth Programs Discipline.

Canadian Red Cross Instructors can acquire multiple Instructor Certifications, across multiple disciplines...allowing them to teach all the Canadian Red Cross courses included within each Instructor Certification level that they hold.

After completing the Initial Certification process for one Instructor level, Canadian Red Cross Instructors can follow a shortened development process to expand to other Programs & Disciplines.

Although existing Canadian Red Cross Instructors add the Youth Programs Discipline to their Instructor portfolio, current Instructor certification is not a prerequisite to become a Youth Leader.

The Canadian Red Cross Youth Leadership Programs, and the corresponding "Instructor" certifications are distinct from the other Programs and Disciplines, with their focus on a younger target demographic.

Youth Leadership Program courses are generally shorter than most of their full First Aid program counterparts, and there is less emphasis on specific skill competencies.

The Youth Leadership courses encourage and develop habits of safety, self-reliance, respect and responsibility. Rather than teaching clinical first aid skills, the goal is to create a safe and enjoyable learning environment that allows young people to discover and apply key lessons on their own terms. However, there are some broadly applicable first aid skills integrated as well.
